CONNECTICUT DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES

TIME EXTENSION FACT SHEET

 

Federal law allows a vehicle owner to request a time extension of their vehicle’s emissions test date due to various exigent circumstances.  Proper current documentation must be submitted providing proof to the Commissioner’s satisfaction that the vehicle is unable to be tested at the time of its scheduled inspection and the 30 days thereafter. 

 

Exigent Circumstances and Documentation:

 

  • 1.      Military:  This applies to vehicles owned by residents of Connecticut on out of state active military duty.

 

    • ·         Acceptable Documentation – Copies of: the vehicle’s registration, military orders and military ID.

 

  • 2.      Out of State:  If the vehicle is out of state at the time of its scheduled test date and the 30 days thereafter.

 

  • ·         Acceptable Documentation – A vehicle ID number verification form must be completed by an out of state authority (Police, DMV or Military) and submitted with a written request for a time extension. Call or write the CT DMV to request a form. See phone number and address below.

  

2a. Out of State:  If the vehicle owner is out of state and the vehicle is in CT and unable to be tested:  Follow the requirements for vehicle in storage.

 

3.Vehicle in storage

  

  • ·         Acceptable Documentation – Copies of storage receipts with dates or a letter from your insurance company stating liability coverage has been suspended at the time of its scheduled inspection and the 30 days thereafter.

        

  • 4.      Vehicle Stolen – Under Repair – In Accident

  

    • ·         Acceptable Documentation – A police report and repair bill(s) indicating that your vehicle is unavailable to be tested at the time of its test date and the 30 days thereafter. Also acceptable, is proof that liability insurance has been suspended. 

  

  • 5.      Illness or Hospitalization of Owner

  

  • ·         Acceptable Documentation – Hospital receipts or a letter from your doctor, on letterhead, indicating you are unable to have your vehicle tested at the time of its scheduled inspection and the 30 days thereafter.
