Tests For Vehicles 1995 and Older

Older vehicles are tested using a method called ASM 25/25 or Acceleration Simulation Mode. This test requires using a dynamometer, a treadmill-type simulator of real world driving conditions. It also requires the testing inspector to insert a sensor-probe in the vehicle's tailpipe to test the vehicle's emissions.

Another possible test for vehicles 1995 and older is the Pre-conditioned Two-Speed Idle Test, which also uses a tailpipe probe to measure emissions while the vehicle's transmission is in neutral.

Vehicle emissions testing is the State's most effective way to improve air quality.
